head northeast of Quietwater once you've received your third task, all the way up into the mountains.
don't let the monsters take you by surprise! get into a doorway where you can fight them one at a time.
the building immediately north of the exit has what looks like a store, but you can't Transact (lowercase t) across the counter. there's a door keeping the salesman inside - leave him there! he's so friendly that he can accidentally back you into a corner, and then he won't go away unless you fight him, and it's a whole thing. he's fine where he is.
you have to go the long way around the lake to get to the cave that holds the actual mines.
once you're inside, fight the monsters who've already found you, then run for the little switch room all the way east so you can make a stand in the doorway.
in the switch room, once you're done fighting, start with the purple polygon switch, then after you deal with the crocodile, the pink square switch and the orange triangle switch (which lets you get to the yellow star switch, which you should also flip).
next to the switch room, you can find a bunch of cool stuff, including an Amber ring (lets you see in the dark!) and a Zoom Shield.
