my preference is to avoid using Skeleton Keys during the tutorial (you can skip many doors with passwalls or walking around), and to stock up on them when i get to the shop.
you can level up as high as you like here, using spells like Illuminate Area (shift-I) and Hasten Self (shift-H) - i like to get to about level 7 before venturing into Outer Terra. that way, you get really powerful without having to worry about keeping yourself fed or getting beat up by enemies!
